Roots Down, Sprout Up!

Observe the bean first sprout and root, and understand that roots grow down while stems grow up.

Look closely! Your bean may be sprouting. Roots grow down into the soil. The stem grows up toward the light.

This is one of the most exciting weeks: your very first sprout!

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look at the cup together every day this week for the first signs of a sprout.
  • Use your body to act it out: crouch down for roots, reach up for the stem.
  • If you see a sprout, celebrate it together. If not yet, encourage patience.
  • Talk about how the plant seems to know which way is up, toward the light.
Talk about it:
  • What do you think a root looks like?
  • Why do you think roots go down instead of up?
  • How did it feel to see your first sprout, or to still be waiting?

Mastery looks like: They can say that roots grow down and stems grow up, and connect that to reaching for light.

Common stumbles: Assuming something is wrong if a sprout has not appeared yet is common; different beans sprout at different speeds, and that is normal.
