What Do You Hear? Quiet Listening

Sit quietly and identify sounds by listening carefully.

Sit very still. Close your eyes. What can you hear?

Some sounds are loud, like a dog barking. Some sounds are quiet, like a clock ticking.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Practice being still together first. Model closing your eyes and staying quiet.
  • After listening, take turns naming every sound you both noticed.
  • Sort sounds into loud and quiet as a simple game.
  • Try this in different rooms and outside. Sound changes with location.
Talk about it:
  • What was the quietest sound you heard today?
  • What was the loudest sound?
  • Was it easy or hard to stay still and just listen?

Mastery looks like: They can sit quietly for about 30 seconds and name at least two different sounds they heard.

Common stumbles: Wanting to talk right away instead of listening first is normal; a fun quiet game, like who hears the most sounds, helps.
