Where Does a Fish Live?

Learn that fish live in water and breathe through gills, and observe a fish if possible.

Fish live in water. They cannot breathe air like you do.

Fish breathe through gills, special parts on the sides of their head.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Visit a fish tank, a pond, or even a picture book with real fish if you can.
  • Point out the gills opening and closing if the fish is close enough to see.
  • Compare how you breathe with your nose and mouth to how a fish breathes with gills.
  • Talk about other animals that live in water, such as whales or turtles, and how they are different.
Talk about it:
  • Why can a fish not live on dry land?
  • What is your favorite kind of fish or water animal?
  • How is a fish home different from your home?

Mastery looks like: They can say that fish live in water and breathe through gills, not lungs like people.

Common stumbles: Thinking fish breathe the exact same way people do is common; the simple idea of gills for water, lungs for air, is enough for now.
