Bugs Under Logs: Look, Do Not Squish

Gently observe bugs found under logs or rocks and practice looking without harming them.

Many bugs live under logs and rocks. It is cool and damp there, just how they like it.

Look at bugs with your eyes, not your hands. Go find some!

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pick a real log, rock, or flowerpot outside to lift together.
  • Model gentle hands: lift slowly, look, and set it back down softly.
  • Count and describe bugs together instead of naming every species perfectly.
  • Praise gentle, careful looking rather than grabbing or squishing.
Talk about it:
  • What was the most interesting bug you found?
  • Why is it cool and damp under there, where a bug likes to hide?
  • How did it feel to put the log back down carefully?

Mastery looks like: They can lift a log or rock gently, observe bugs without touching them, and return the log to its place.

Common stumbles: The urge to poke or grab a moving bug is very common at this age; a calm reminder to use looking eyes, not grabbing hands, helps.
