Birds and Nests: Spot One!

Observe birds outside and learn why and how they build nests.

Birds build nests to keep their eggs and babies safe. Go look for one!

Nests can be in trees, bushes, or even on top of a light pole.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Go on a short outdoor walk together and look up into trees and bushes.
  • If you spot a real nest, stay a safe distance away and watch quietly.
  • Talk about why birds pick high, hidden spots for their nests.
  • If you cannot find a real nest, look at pictures of nests together instead.
Talk about it:
  • Why do you think birds build nests up high?
  • What sounds might tell you a nest is nearby?
  • How would you feel if someone came too close to your home?

Mastery looks like: They can explain in their own words that nests keep bird eggs and babies safe, and know to observe from a distance.

Common stumbles: Wanting to touch or get close to a nest is a common and caring impulse; explaining that a mother bird may leave if disturbed helps it click.
