Pets and What They Need

Identify common pets and describe what they need to stay healthy.

Pets are animals that live with people. Dogs, cats, fish, and birds can all be pets.

Every pet needs food, water, a safe place to sleep, and love.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • If you have a pet, do this lesson together with the real animal.
  • If not, use a stuffed animal or a picture book about pets instead.
  • List needs together: food, water, shelter, and love.
  • Talk about how taking care of a pet is a job, even for kids.
Talk about it:
  • What pet would you like to have, and why?
  • What is one job you could do to help take care of a pet?
  • How is taking care of a pet like taking care of a baby?

Mastery looks like: They can name a pet and list at least two things it needs to stay healthy.

Common stumbles: Thinking pets only need food is common; gently add water, shelter, and love to round out the picture.
