Name-writing party

Attempt to write or copy your first name, letter by letter, as a celebration of Unit 1 skills.

Today is a party for your name! You have found it, said its letter, traced it, clapped it, and sung it. Now you get to write it.

Writing your name will not look perfect yet, and that is more than okay. Every letter you attempt is real practice.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Put the name card right next to the paper so the child can look back and forth freely.
  • Praise the attempt, not the neatness. A backward letter or a wobbly line is completely normal at this age.
  • Offer a trace-over version (write it lightly, they trace over it) if a blank copy feels too hard.
  • Make it a small celebration: a special pencil, a sticker, or reading the finished name aloud together with pride.
Talk about it:
  • Which letter was the easiest to write?
  • Which letter was the trickiest to write?
  • How did it feel to write your whole name?

Mastery looks like: They attempt every letter of their first name in the correct order, with letters that are at least partly recognizable.

Common stumbles: Skipping a letter in the middle; writing letters in the wrong order; giving up before the last letter.
