Whose name starts like yours?

Compare the first letters of several names to find matches and non-matches.

Some names start with the very same letter as yours. Some do not. Today you go looking for matches.

Two names that start the same way share something special, even if the rest of the name is different.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Lay out name cards for the whole family (or friends) and sort them into two piles: matches and non-matches.
  • Stress that a shared first letter does not mean the names are the same word -- this keeps the idea precise.
  • If no family names match, borrow a couple of friend names or book-character names so a real match shows up.
  • Let the child do the sorting by hand; moving cards makes the comparison concrete.
Talk about it:
  • Whose name matches your first letter?
  • How did you decide two names matched?
  • Whose name is the most different from yours?

Mastery looks like: They can sort a small set of names into matching and non-matching first letters, correctly and independently.

Common stumbles: Matching by name length instead of first letter; assuming two matching first letters means the whole names match.
