Environmental sounds walk (listen!)

Sharpen listening skills by noticing, naming, and imitating sounds in the world around you.

Close your eyes and just listen. The world is full of sounds: birds, cars, wind, your own feet on the ground.

Good listening is the first step to hearing the small sounds inside words later on. Today, just listen to everything around you.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Take an actual walk if you can, or simply sit by an open window; the goal is real sounds, not recordings.
  • Model closing your own eyes and naming a sound first, so the child sees exactly what to do.
  • Encourage describing words: loud, soft, high, low, near, far -- this builds the vocabulary for talking about sound.
  • Let silence sit for a few seconds before asking what they heard; rushing defeats the point of the game.
Talk about it:
  • What was the quietest sound you noticed?
  • What was the loudest sound you noticed?
  • Which sound was your favorite today?

Mastery looks like: They can stay quiet, notice a real sound, name it, and describe it as loud or soft, high or low.

Common stumbles: Talking through the listening time instead of staying quiet; naming a sight instead of a sound.
