Retell a story with three pictures

Retell a short story in order using a beginning, a middle, and an end picture.

After a story, you can tell it again in your own words! Use three pictures: one for the beginning, one for the middle, and one for the end.

Retelling a story in order helps you understand and remember it even better.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pick a very short, very familiar story so the retell focuses on order, not on remembering new content.
  • Draw or find three simple pictures together, one per part, before asking for the retell.
  • Model the retell yourself once, out loud, before asking the child to try it.
  • It is fine if the retell is short and simple; correct order matters more than rich detail at this age.
Talk about it:
  • What happened first in the story?
  • What happened last?
  • Which part of the story was your favorite?

Mastery looks like: They retell a short, familiar story with the beginning, middle, and end in the correct order.

Common stumbles: Telling events out of order; skipping the middle and jumping straight from beginning to end.
