V Y and Z -- the last sound friends

Learn three more sounds: V (vvv), Y (yuh), and Z (zzz), and connect the buzzy ones to sounds learned earlier.

Three friendly sounds close out your letter collection: V buzzes as vvv, Y says yuh, and Z buzzes like a bee: zzz.

Vvv, yuh, zzz -- feel your lips buzz for V and Z, and notice how Y is soft and quick.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Compare vvv to the earlier fff sound: both use teeth on the lip, but vvv buzzes and fff does not.
  • Compare zzz to the earlier sss sound the same way: same mouth shape, but zzz buzzes.
  • Keep Y light and quick; it is one of the softer sounds in the set.
  • Celebrate this as the near-end of the single-letter sounds -- only a couple of rare ones remain.
Talk about it:
  • Which two sounds buzz like a bee or a bug?
  • How is zzz different from sss?
  • What is one word that starts with yuh?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the V, Y, and Z sounds and can explain how the buzzy V and Z relate to the earlier F and S sounds.

Common stumbles: Forgetting to buzz V and Z, making them sound like F and S instead; mixing up Y with the "juh" sound.
