Match YOUR toys to letters

Take a real object, say its name slowly, and point to the written letter that matches its first sound.

You know the sounds. Now match them to the written letters. Pick a toy, say its name, and find the letter it starts with.

This time, you are matching to the letter shape, not just the sound.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Gather five or six toys ahead of time and have a simple written alphabet strip or letter cards on hand.
  • Let the child do the physical matching -- placing a toy next to its letter -- rather than just naming it aloud.
  • If the exact letter is not on hand, write it together on a sticky note in the moment.
  • This week bridges sound work to print. If the match is wrong, check the sound first, then the letter shape.
Talk about it:
  • Which toy was easiest to match to its letter?
  • Which letter surprised you today?
  • How is matching to a letter different from matching to a sound?

Mastery looks like: They can take a real object, isolate its first sound, and correctly point to the matching written letter.

Common stumbles: Matching to the wrong but similar-looking letter; forgetting to say the word slowly before searching for the letter.
