K J and U -- kite jam umbrella

Learn three more sounds: K (kuh), J (juh), and short U (uh), including noticing that K sounds like the earlier C sound.

K says kuh, from the back of your mouth, just like C. J says juh, softer and further forward. U says uh, a short little sound, like in umbrella.

Kuh, juh, uh -- three more sounds ready to learn.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Point out that K and the earlier "kuh" sound for C feel exactly the same in the mouth -- one sound, two possible letters.
  • Model J with a gentle, soft release, different from the harder kuh of K.
  • Keep U short and crisp, not the letter name "you."
  • Wrap up with a quick sort of all three using real toys or pictures.
Talk about it:
  • Which other letter makes the same sound as K?
  • What is one word that starts with juh?
  • Can you say uh, short and fast?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the K, J, and short U sounds and notice that K sounds the same as the earlier C sound.

Common stumbles: Confusing J with the softer "y" sound; stretching the short U into the longer letter name "you."
