I N and E -- itchy nose eggs

Learn three short sounds: short I (ih), N (nnn), and short E (eh), and notice how quick each one is.

I says ih, like an itchy nose. N says nnn, humming right through your nose. E says eh, like eggs.

Ih, nnn, eh -- say each one and notice where you feel it.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use a real itch-and-scratch action for I so the short sound has a funny physical hook.
  • Have the child hum nnn with a finger lightly on their own nose to feel the buzz.
  • Keep E short and crisp (as in "egg"), not the letter name "ee."
  • These three short sounds are easy to blur together -- go slowly and repeat each one a few times.
Talk about it:
  • Where do you feel the nnn sound?
  • What is one word that starts with eh?
  • Can you make an itchy face and say ih?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the short I, N, and short E sounds and sort familiar words correctly among the three.

Common stumbles: Saying letter names instead of sounds; blending the three short, similar sounds together.
