D G and O -- dig go octopus

Learn three more sounds: D (duh), G (guh), and short O (ah), and notice how differently each one feels.

Three more sounds: D says duh, like digging with a shovel. G says guh, from the back of your throat, like "go." O says ah, like an octopus with round, wide arms.

Duh, guh, ah -- feel where each one happens in your mouth.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Mime digging with an imaginary shovel for D -- the action anchors the tongue-tap sound.
  • Feel the back-of-throat rumble for G by placing a hand gently on the throat.
  • Round your own lips into an O shape as a visual model before asking the child to copy it.
  • Briefly revisit last week is P, B, and R sounds as a warm-up.
Talk about it:
  • Where in your mouth do you feel the guh sound?
  • Can you make your mouth round like the letter O?
  • What is one word that starts with duh?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the D, G, and short O sounds and sort a few familiar words correctly among the three.

Common stumbles: Confusing the similar back-of-mouth D and G sounds; saying the letter name "oh" instead of the short "ah" sound for O.
