P B and R with puffs and rumbles

Learn three new sounds together: P (puh), B (buh), and R (rrr), noticing how your mouth moves for each.

Three new sounds this week! P says puh -- feel a little puff of air. B says buh -- a softer puff. R says rrr -- a rumble like a growling engine.

Put your hand in front of your mouth. Puh puffs air out. Buh barely does. Rrr just rumbles.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Teach the three sounds in separate short bursts rather than all at once; return to each a few times through the week.
  • Use the hand-in-front-of-mouth trick to feel the puff of air for P versus the smaller puff for B.
  • Growl playfully for R -- a silly tiger or motor-engine growl works well.
  • Mix all three together only after each feels comfortable alone.
Talk about it:
  • Which of the three sounds is your favorite to make?
  • Which sound has the biggest puff of air?
  • Can you find a toy that starts with P, B, or R?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the P, B, and R sounds and correctly sort a few familiar words by which of the three they start with.

Common stumbles: Mixing up the similar-feeling P and B; swallowing the R sound instead of rumbling it clearly.
