H says hh -- huff like a puppy

Learn that the letter H makes a breathy "hh" sound, like a panting puppy, and find that sound at the start of words.

The letter H is just a breath: hh, like a tired puppy panting after a run.

Say hh with me. Hat starts with hh. House starts with hh too!

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Model panting like a tired, happy puppy -- the physical action makes the breathy sound obvious and fun.
  • Point out that hh uses only breath, no voice at all, which makes it different from every sound learned so far.
  • Use real H words (hat, house, hand) rather than the letter name "aitch."
  • This closes out the first set of six sounds; briefly touch all six (S, A, T, M, C, H) together before finishing.
Talk about it:
  • What does a tired puppy sound like?
  • What is one word that starts with hh?
  • Which of the six sounds we learned so far is your favorite?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the "hh" sound on request and identify whether a spoken word starts with it.

Common stumbles: Adding voice to the sound instead of just breathing it out; forgetting hh when reviewing all six sounds together.
