C says kuh -- cat and cup

Learn that the letter C can make the "kuh" sound, like in cat and cup, and find that sound at the start of words.

The letter C often makes a short, crisp sound: kuh, from the back of your mouth. Cat starts with kuh. Cup starts with kuh too!

Say kuh with me, nice and short.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use real, familiar C words like cat and cup, since C can make more than one sound later on -- kuh is the one to start with.
  • Feel the sound land at the back of the mouth, different from the front-of-mouth sounds learned so far.
  • Keep it playful with a real cat toy or cup nearby if you have one, to make the sound concrete.
  • Briefly review mmm and tuh before starting, so earlier sounds stay fresh.
Talk about it:
  • Where in your mouth do you feel the kuh sound?
  • What is one word that starts with kuh?
  • Can you find a cup or something like it right now?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the "kuh" sound on request and identify whether a spoken word starts with it.

Common stumbles: Saying the letter name "see" instead of the sound "kuh"; confusing kuh with the similar back-of-mouth guh sound learned later.
