M says mmm -- yummy sound

Learn that the letter M makes the "mmm" sound, like tasting something yummy, and find that sound at the start of words.

The letter M makes a happy humming sound: mmm, like when food tastes really good.

Say mmm with me. Milk starts with mmm. Monkey starts with mmm too!

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pair the sound with an actual yummy snack or pretend bite so the tummy-rub and the hum feel natural together.
  • Notice that mmm is made with closed lips, unlike most sounds learned so far -- point that out.
  • Use real M words (milk, moon, monkey) rather than the letter name "em."
  • Mix in sss and tuh from the last two weeks as a quick warm-up before starting.
Talk about it:
  • What does mmm feel like in your lips?
  • What is one word that starts with mmm?
  • What is your favorite yummy food that starts with mmm?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the "mmm" sound on request and identify whether a spoken word starts with it.

Common stumbles: Opening the lips while trying to hum mmm; saying the letter name "em" instead of the sound.
