S says sss -- snake hunt

Learn that the letter S makes the "sss" sound, like a snake, and find that sound at the start of words.

The letter S makes a hissing sound: sss, like a snake sliding through grass.

Say sss with me. Sun starts with sss. Sock starts with sss too!

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Wiggle your arm like a snake while hissing sss so the sound and the motion connect.
  • Stretch the sound at the front of real words (sss-un, sss-ock) rather than saying the letter name "ess."
  • Go on a mini "snake hunt" for S objects around the room before homework so the search feels playful, not academic.
  • If the letter name and the sound get mixed up, gently model the sound again -- that is expected at this age.
Talk about it:
  • What does a snake sound like?
  • What is one word that starts with sss?
  • Can you find something in this room that starts with sss?

Mastery looks like: They can produce the "sss" sound on request and identify whether a spoken word starts with it.

Common stumbles: Saying the letter name "ess" instead of the sound "sss"; missing the sound in longer words.
