Sort by two rules: big AND red

Sort objects using two rules at the same time, such as big AND red.

Sometimes a sorting rule uses two words at once, like "big AND red."

That means the thing has to be big, and it also has to be red, to fit the rule.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Start with objects that differ clearly in both size and color so the two-rule sort is not confusing.
  • Say both words every time: "big AND red" - stressing the word "and" shows both rules must be true.
  • Let your child test an object out loud: "Is it big? Is it red?" before deciding.
  • If two rules feel like too much, back up to one rule (just color, or just size) and try two rules again another day.
Talk about it:
  • Does this toy match both rules, big AND red?
  • Why does this one not count, even though it is red?
  • Can you think of your own two-rule sorting game?

Mastery looks like: Child correctly identifies and sorts objects that match two attributes at the same time, such as big and red.

Common stumbles: Child sorts by only one of the two rules and stops checking the second one.
