Patterns in nature: petals and stripes

Notice and describe repeating patterns found in nature.

Patterns are not just something we build with blocks - nature is full of patterns too.

Stripes on an animal, petals on a flower, and spots on a shell can all repeat in a pattern.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • A nature walk, or even picture books about animals and flowers, both work well for this week.
  • Connect explicitly back to the block patterns from earlier weeks: "this is just like our red, blue pattern, but with stripes!"
  • Counting petals is a nice bonus skill layered onto pattern-spotting - let your child count whatever they notice.
  • Not everything in nature has a strict pattern - it is fine to also notice "that one is not really a pattern," which shows real understanding.
Talk about it:
  • What pattern do you see on this animal or flower?
  • Can you count the petals on this flower?
  • Where else in nature have you seen a pattern like this?

Mastery looks like: Child identifies and describes a repeating pattern in a natural object and connects it to the block patterns practiced earlier in the year.

Common stumbles: Child calls any decorated or colorful natural object a "pattern," even when it does not actually repeat in a regular way.
