Sort by color

Sort a mixed group of objects into piles by color.

Things that are the same color can go together in a group.

Sorting means putting things that match into the same pile.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Start with just two colors so the sort is not overwhelming.
  • Say the rule out loud: "same color goes together."
  • Let your child lead the sorting - your job is to ask "why" and celebrate correct groups.
  • After sorting, count each pile together - sorting and counting go hand in hand.
Talk about it:
  • Why do these two toys belong in the same pile?
  • Which pile has more, the red pile or the blue pile?
  • Can you find something in the house that is the same color as this block?

Mastery looks like: Child sorts a mixed group of objects into correct color piles without help.

Common stumbles: Child sorts by another feature, like size or shape, instead of color, when both are mixed in.
