Positional words: on, under, beside

Understand and correctly use the positional words on, under, and beside.

Position words tell you WHERE something is - on top, underneath, or right next to something else.

On means touching the top. Under means below something. Beside means right next to it.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Act out every position word with a real object - these words are best learned through the body, not just talk.
  • Mix up the words in a simple game: "put the ball beside the couch," "put the ball under the couch."
  • Point out position words naturally all day: "your shoes are under the bed," "sit beside me."
  • Add more words over time (behind, in front of, between) once on, under, and beside feel solid.
Talk about it:
  • Where is the toy: on, under, or beside the table?
  • Can you put the ball under the chair for me?
  • Can you find something that is beside you right now?

Mastery looks like: Child correctly follows and uses the position words on, under, and beside when placing or describing objects.

Common stumbles: Child confuses beside with in front of or behind, since all three describe "near" rather than on top or underneath.
