Which pile wins? Compare to 10

Compare two sets with totals up to 10 and identify which set is larger.

Now that you can count to 10, you can compare bigger piles too.

Count each pile all the way, then compare the two numbers to see which pile wins, meaning which one is more.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Counting both piles all the way through, every time, is still the rule - no guessing by eye yet at these bigger sizes.
  • Turn it into a friendly game: "which pile wins?" adds a little competitive fun to comparing.
  • Bigger totals (up to 10) take longer to count, so be patient and let your child finish each count fully.
  • Revisit "the same" as a valid answer when both piles happen to match.
Talk about it:
  • Which pile do you think will win before we count? Were you right?
  • How do you know which pile has more once you have counted both?
  • Can you build a pile that beats mine?

Mastery looks like: Child accurately counts two sets up to 10 and correctly identifies which has more, fewer, or if they are equal.

Common stumbles: Child compares piles by eye (which one is taller or wider) instead of trusting the counted numbers.
