Shapes hiding in the house

Identify circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles hidden in everyday household objects.

Shapes are hiding all over your house, once you know how to look.

A window can be a rectangle, a clock can be a circle, and a slice of pizza can be a triangle.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Turn this into an active scavenger hunt - moving room to room keeps a 4-year-old engaged much longer than sitting still.
  • Ask your child to explain WHY an object is that shape (count the sides and corners) rather than just naming it.
  • Keep a quick list or drawing of all four shapes found, to celebrate at the end.
  • If a shape is tricky to find, give a specific room hint ("look in the kitchen") rather than pointing at the object.
Talk about it:
  • What shape did you find that surprised you?
  • How do you know that shape is a triangle and not a square?
  • Which shape was easiest to find around the house? Which was hardest?

Mastery looks like: Child independently finds and correctly names examples of all four shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) around the house.

Common stumbles: Child finds an object but mislabels the shape, especially mixing up square and rectangle.
