Copy a pattern, then make your own

Copy a given AB pattern exactly, then create an original AB pattern.

Copying a pattern means making your own row that matches another row exactly.

Once you can copy a pattern, you are ready to invent your very own.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child check their own copy against the original before you check it - self-checking builds independence.
  • Celebrate an original pattern just as much as a correct copy - inventing is the bigger leap.
  • If copying is hard, build the copy right next to the original, matching one piece at a time.
  • Any two-part idea works for an original pattern: two colors, two shapes, two sounds, two sizes.
Talk about it:
  • Does your pattern match mine exactly?
  • What two things did you choose for your own pattern?
  • How did you decide what pattern to make?

Mastery looks like: Child accurately copies a given AB pattern and independently creates an original AB pattern with a different pair of items.

Common stumbles: Child copies the colors used but not the order, so the pattern looks similar but does not actually repeat correctly.
