AB patterns with blocks: red, blue, red, blue

Recognize and extend a simple two-part repeating pattern (an AB pattern).

A pattern repeats in the same order, over and over: red, blue, red, blue.

This kind of pattern has just two parts that keep swapping places - we call it an AB pattern.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Say the pattern out loud together every time, emphasizing the repeat: "red, BLUE, red, BLUE."
  • Use two very different items (color, size, or sound) so the two parts of the pattern are easy to tell apart.
  • Cover up or hide the next block and ask your child to guess before revealing it.
  • Try patterns with sound and movement too, not just objects lined up on a table.
Talk about it:
  • What comes next in this pattern?
  • Can you say the pattern out loud with me?
  • What are the two things that keep repeating in this pattern?

Mastery looks like: Child identifies the repeating unit in a simple AB pattern and correctly predicts what comes next.

Common stumbles: Child copies the objects present but does not notice the repeating rule, so they cannot predict what comes next.
