Triangles and rectangles hunt

Recognize and name triangles and rectangles, and tell a rectangle apart from a square.

A triangle has 3 straight sides and 3 corners.

A rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners too, like a square, but two sides are longer than the other two.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Cut a sandwich or paper into a triangle so your child can hold and count a real 3-sided shape.
  • Compare a square and a rectangle side by side so the "all equal" versus "two long, two short" difference is visible.
  • Count sides and corners out loud together every time a new shape comes up.
  • Keep circling back to circles and squares from last week so all four shapes stay fresh.
Talk about it:
  • How many sides does a triangle have?
  • What makes a rectangle different from a square?
  • Can you find a triangle or a rectangle in this room?

Mastery looks like: Child correctly names triangles and rectangles and can tell a rectangle apart from a square by its side lengths.

Common stumbles: Child calls every four-sided shape a square, without checking whether all four sides are equal.
