Circles and squares hunt

Recognize and name circles and squares in real, everyday objects.

A circle is round, like a wheel, with no corners at all.

A square has 4 sides that are all the same length, and 4 corners.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child trace the edges of real circles and squares with a finger - feeling "no corners" versus "4 corners" builds the idea.
  • Go on an active shape hunt around the house instead of only looking at flashcards.
  • Use the words "corner" and "side" naturally as you count them together.
  • It is fine if squares and rectangles blur a little this week - rectangles get their own careful week soon.
Talk about it:
  • Can you find a circle somewhere in this room?
  • How many corners does a square have?
  • What makes a circle different from a square?

Mastery looks like: Child correctly names circles and squares in real objects and can explain that circles have no corners while squares have 4 equal sides.

Common stumbles: Child calls any four-sided shape a square, even when the sides are not equal (that is really a rectangle).
