Cutting a curved line

Use safety scissors to cut along a curved line, turning the paper as they go.

Straight lines go one direction. Curved lines bend, like a smile or a hill.

To cut a curve, you turn the paper a little with each snip. Slow and steady wins this one.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Draw big, gentle curves at first. Sharp curves are much harder for new scissor hands.
  • Model turning the paper slowly with your own hands so your child sees the motion.
  • It is fine to go outside the line sometimes. Following the general curve shape is the goal.
  • Try cutting around a circle or a simple cloud shape for extra practice.
Talk about it:
  • What is different about cutting a curve versus a straight line?
  • What did you have to remember to turn?
  • What curved shape would you like to cut next?

Mastery looks like: They cut along a gentle curve, turning the paper to follow the bend.

Common stumbles: Trying to turn the scissors instead of turning the paper, which twists the cut.
