Mixing colors: blue and yellow

Mix blue and yellow paint together and discover that they make green.

You already turned red and yellow into orange. Today you try two new colors: blue and yellow.

Mix a little blue with a little yellow. Watch closely. What new color shows up this time?

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Set out just three paint colors this week: red, yellow, blue. Every other color comes from these three.
  • Let your child predict before mixing: ask what they think blue and yellow will make.
  • Line up the two mixing results side by side: orange from last week, green from today.
  • Name the pattern out loud: mixing two colors makes a brand new color.
Talk about it:
  • What two colors did you mix today?
  • What new color did they make?
  • How is today different from red and yellow?

Mastery looks like: They predict and correctly name green as the result of mixing blue and yellow.

Common stumbles: Mixing in leftover red from the palette by accident, muddying the green.
