Clay or dough sculpture

Sculpt a simple three-dimensional form using clay or dough, rather than a flat drawing.

Drawing is flat, on paper. Sculpture stands up in every direction. Today you will make something with clay or dough that you can walk all the way around.

Roll, pinch, and press the clay into a shape. It could be an animal, a person, or anything you imagine.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Real clay, playdough, or a homemade dough recipe all work. No special tools are required.
  • Model pressing two pieces firmly together so they do not fall apart right away.
  • Encourage walking around the finished piece, since that all-sides view is what makes it a sculpture.
  • If using air-dry clay, let it dry fully so it can be kept and displayed later.
Talk about it:
  • What did you sculpt today?
  • How did you join your pieces together?
  • What looks different about your sculpture from the front versus the back?

Mastery looks like: They sculpt a simple form from at least two joined pieces and can describe viewing it from multiple sides.

Common stumbles: Pressing pieces together too gently, so they separate before the sculpture is finished.
