Build tall, then draw it

Build a tall structure with blocks or similar materials, then draw a picture of the finished build.

Building is its own kind of art. Today you will build something as tall as you can, then draw a picture of it.

Stack carefully. A wide bottom often helps a tall tower stay standing.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Blocks, cups, boxes, or cans all work fine for building. Use what you have.
  • Let it fall down. Rebuilding after a tumble is part of the fun and the learning.
  • Encourage looking back and forth between the real tower and the drawing paper.
  • Ask about the engineering, gently: why did it fall there, and what could help it stand?
Talk about it:
  • How tall was your tower?
  • What made it stay standing, or what made it fall?
  • How is drawing a building different from drawing a person or animal?

Mastery looks like: They build a stable multi-piece tower and draw a picture that reasonably matches it.

Common stumbles: Starting with a narrow base, which tips the tower over early and can be discouraging.
