Draw yourself: a self-portrait

Draw a self-portrait, looking in a mirror and noticing their own features.

A self-portrait is a picture of you, made by you. Today you will look in a mirror and draw what you see.

Look closely. What color are your eyes? What color is your hair? Do you have freckles or dimples?

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • A real mirror makes a big difference. Let your child look back and forth between the mirror and the paper.
  • Ask specific noticing questions: what color are your eyes, straight or curly hair?
  • Celebrate individual details, like freckles, glasses, or a gap tooth, as things that make the portrait special.
  • Save this portrait. It is wonderful to compare to a new one drawn next year.
Talk about it:
  • What did you notice about yourself in the mirror?
  • What detail makes your portrait look like you?
  • What is different about drawing yourself versus drawing someone else?

Mastery looks like: They draw a self-portrait that includes at least a few real, observed features like hair or eye color.

Common stumbles: Drawing a generic face without looking in the mirror first, missing their own real features.
