Paint how music feels

Listen to music and use color and brush movement to express how the music feels.

Music can feel fast or slow, happy or calm. Today you will paint those feelings instead of drawing a picture of a thing.

Listen closely. If the music feels fast, maybe your brush moves in quick zigzags. If it feels calm, maybe it moves in slow, smooth curves.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Choose two very different songs ahead of time: one clearly fast and energetic, one clearly slow and calm.
  • There is no wrong painting here. The goal is connecting a feeling to a color and a movement.
  • Ask how the song makes their body want to move, before they even pick up the brush.
  • Let the paintings dry side by side so the contrast between fast and slow is easy to see later.
Talk about it:
  • How did the fast song make you want to paint?
  • How did the slow song make you want to paint?
  • Which painting do you like better, and why?

Mastery looks like: They change their brush movement and color choices in a way that connects to how the music feels.

Common stumbles: Painting the exact same way for both songs, without yet noticing a difference to respond to.
