Weaving paper strips

Weave paper strips over and under a base sheet to make a simple woven pattern.

Weaving means going over, then under, then over again. Over-under is its own kind of pattern.

Slide a strip of paper over one cut slit, then under the next, all the way across.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pre-cut the base sheet slits ahead of time. That prep step is too hard for small hands.
  • Model the very first strip slowly, narrating over, under, over, under as you go.
  • Little fingers may need help holding the base flat while sliding the strip through.
  • It is fine if strips slip or the weave is loose. Straighten it gently together at the end.
Talk about it:
  • What is the pattern in weaving called: over and what?
  • Was starting with over or under trickier to keep track of?
  • What could you use your woven paper for?

Mastery looks like: They weave a strip over-under across a base with a mostly consistent pattern.

Common stumbles: Losing track partway and going over twice in a row, breaking the over-under pattern.
