Nature patterns

Collect natural objects outside and arrange them into a repeating pattern, like leaf-rock-leaf.

Patterns are not just for beads and paper. Nature has patterns too, if you go outside and collect.

Gather leaves, rocks, and sticks. Line them up in a repeating pattern, like leaf, rock, leaf, rock.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Take a short walk outside together to gather natural materials before starting.
  • Let your child lead the collecting. Guide only if something is unsafe to pick up.
  • Lay the pattern out on the ground, a sidewalk, or a tray brought outside.
  • Take a photo of the finished nature pattern. It will not last, so a picture keeps the memory.
Talk about it:
  • What two or three objects did you use in your pattern?
  • What is different about a pattern made from nature versus one made from beads?
  • What other pattern could you build outside next time?

Mastery looks like: They arrange collected natural objects into a correct, consistent repeating pattern.

Common stumbles: Running out of one type of object partway through and breaking the pattern to finish it.
