Loud and soft music patterns

Recognize and create a repeating pattern of loud and soft sounds using clapping or instruments.

Sounds can make a pattern too, not just colors and shapes. Loud, soft, loud, soft is a sound pattern.

Clap loud, then clap soft, then loud again. Listen closely so you can copy the pattern.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Model a very clear difference between loud and soft so the pattern is easy to hear.
  • Take turns: you clap a pattern, your child copies it, then your child invents one for you to copy.
  • Try patterns with real instruments or safe kitchen items, like a pot and a spoon.
  • Connect it back to color and shape patterns: this is a pattern too, just with sound.
Talk about it:
  • What is the difference between a loud sound and a soft sound?
  • What comes next in loud, soft, loud, soft?
  • Can you make up your own sound pattern?

Mastery looks like: They copy a simple loud-soft pattern accurately and can predict what comes next.

Common stumbles: Making all claps the same volume, so the loud and soft are not different enough to hear.
