Sponge stamp patterns

Use two sponge shapes to stamp a repeating pattern across a strip of paper.

Sponges cut into shapes make great stamps. Today you will use two different sponge shapes to build a pattern.

Dip one shape, stamp it. Dip the other shape, stamp it. Keep repeating the same order.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Cut simple shapes into kitchen sponges ahead of time: a circle, a square, a triangle.
  • Use a different color for each shape at first. It makes the pattern easier to see and say.
  • Encourage saying the pattern out loud while stamping, just like the bead necklace.
  • Let the strip get long. A longer pattern is a bigger accomplishment to be proud of.
Talk about it:
  • What two shapes did you use in your pattern?
  • What comes next after circle, square, circle, square?
  • What would a three-shape pattern look like?

Mastery looks like: They stamp a consistent repeating pattern and can say what shape comes next.

Common stumbles: Stamping shapes in a random order instead of a repeating one, especially when excited.
