Pattern necklaces

String beads or cereal in a repeating two-color pattern, like red-yellow-red-yellow.

A pattern repeats in the same order, over and over. Red, yellow, red, yellow is a pattern.

Today you will string beads or round cereal onto string or yarn, following a repeating pattern.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Round cereal, large beads, or cut straws all work well for little hands and thick string.
  • Say the pattern out loud together every time a new bead goes on: red, yellow, red, yellow.
  • Start with just two colors before trying anything more complicated.
  • Tie off the necklace and let your child wear their pattern proudly.
Talk about it:
  • What two colors did you use in your pattern?
  • What color comes next in a red-yellow pattern?
  • Can you think of a pattern somewhere else, like on clothing?

Mastery looks like: They continue a simple two-color pattern correctly and can predict what comes next.

Common stumbles: Losing track partway and adding an extra bead of the wrong color, breaking the pattern.
