Roll, throw, catch

Practice rolling, throwing, and catching a soft ball, building gross motor coordination.

Balls move in different ways depending on what you do to them. Roll it low. Throw it through the air. Catch it with both hands.

Today you will practice all three with a soft, safe ball. Watch the ball the whole time.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use a soft, lightweight ball, like a beach ball or a foam ball, so drops and misses do not sting or discourage.
  • Start close together, then take a step back after each success to build distance slowly.
  • Remind them often to watch the ball, not their hands or their partner's face.
  • Celebrate attempts and near-catches just as much as clean catches.
Talk about it:
  • What do your eyes need to do while catching?
  • Which was trickiest today: rolling, throwing, or catching?
  • How could we make catching easier next time?

Mastery looks like: They roll and throw with reasonable control and catch a soft ball with both hands most of the time.

Common stumbles: Closing their eyes right before the ball arrives, which causes most missed catches.
