Mixing colors: red and yellow

Mix red and yellow paint or dough together and discover the new color they make.

Today you are a color scientist. You have two colors: red and yellow. When you mix them together, something new happens.

Put a little red next to a little yellow. Stir them together with a brush, a stick, or your fingers. Watch closely. A brand new color appears.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Set up a washable space before you start: an old shirt, a paper towel nearby, and paint or dough that is safe for little hands.
  • Let your child do the mixing. Your job is to watch, name the colors, and ask what they see happening.
  • If using dough instead of paint, knead a red ball and a yellow ball together until the color is even.
  • There is no wrong way to mix. Celebrate the new color, even if it comes out uneven.
Talk about it:
  • What two colors did you mix?
  • What new color did you make?
  • Where else have you seen that color?

Mastery looks like: They can mix red and yellow and correctly name the new color as orange.

Common stumbles: Mixing too many colors at once so the result turns muddy instead of a clear new color.
