Write your last name too

Write your last name from memory, using the same careful letter formation as the first name.

You already write your first name. This week you add your last name too. Together they are your full name.

A last name can be longer or trickier than a first name. Go slowly. Work on one part at a time if you need to.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Write your child's last name on a card the same way you did for the first name in week 1.
  • If the last name is long or has a tricky letter combination, practice just that tricky part on its own first.
  • Remind your child that both the first name and the last name start with a capital letter.
  • Do not expect the last name to be as smooth as the first name yet. It is newer practice.
Talk about it:
  • What is tricky about writing your last name?
  • Do your first and last name share any of the same letters?
  • Can you write your whole name, first and last, without help?

Mastery looks like: They write their last name from memory with a capital first letter, and can write their full name with a space between the two parts.

Common stumbles: Forgetting the space between first and last name; not capitalizing the last name; giving up partway through a longer last name.
