Label your drawings (one word)

Draw a simple picture and write one word to label it, connecting a picture to its name.

Drawing and writing are partners. Today you will draw a picture, then write one word that names it.

Say the word slowly first. Listen for the sounds. Then write a letter for the sounds you hear. It does not have to be perfect.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child pick what to draw. A picture they care about makes the label feel worth writing.
  • Say the word together, stretching it like a rubber band: mmmaaap. Do not rush this step.
  • Accept a letter that matches the SOUND even if the spelling is not exactly right, like kat for cat. This is expected and healthy at this age.
  • Read the label back together after it is written, pointing to each letter as you say the sound.
Talk about it:
  • What did you draw today?
  • What sounds did you hear when you said your word slowly?
  • Which letter in your label are you proudest of?

Mastery looks like: They draw a picture and write a one-word label using letters that match the sounds they hear, even if spelling is not conventional.

Common stumbles: Writing random letters unconnected to the sounds; skipping the say-it-slowly step; feeling stuck without a model to copy.
