Author's chair: read yours aloud

Read your own finished writing aloud clearly to an audience, sharing it as its author.

Writers do not just write. They also share their work out loud. This is called the author's chair: a special turn to read your own writing to others.

Sit somewhere everyone can see and hear you. Read slowly and clearly, pointing to the words as you go.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Make this feel special: a real chair, a little introduction, like "now reading, the author."
  • Let your child choose which piece to share. Ownership makes the reading feel meaningful.
  • Listen fully, without correcting, while they read. Save any comments for after.
  • Give one specific, genuine compliment about the writing, not just the reading.
Talk about it:
  • Which piece of writing did you choose to share, and why?
  • How did it feel to read your own writing out loud?
  • What compliment did you get from your listener?

Mastery looks like: They select their own piece of writing and read it aloud clearly and confidently to a listener.

Common stumbles: Reading too quietly or too fast to be understood; feeling too shy to share; losing their place while reading and pointing.
