Checkpoint: writes CVC words solo

Show that you can write several CVC words independently, without sound-by-sound help.

Another checkpoint week. This time you show how well you can write short words all by yourself, no help sounding them out.

Take a breath, say the word in your head, and write it. Trust the sounds you already know.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Say each word only once, then step back and let your child write it fully independently.
  • Resist the urge to jump in and help right away. Give a quiet moment for them to work it out.
  • If a word is wrong, praise the sounds that are correct before gently fixing the one that is off.
  • This checkpoint shows real growth since week 10, when stretching a word out loud was brand new.
Talk about it:
  • Which of today words felt the easiest to write alone?
  • Did any word surprise you by being harder than you expected?
  • How does writing a word alone feel different from stretching it out loud together?

Mastery looks like: They independently write several CVC words correctly, without needing the word stretched out loud for them first.

Common stumbles: Needing the word repeated many times before writing; leaving out the vowel sound; asking for the first letter before trying it themselves.
