Stretch a word, write its sounds

Stretch a spoken word into its separate sounds and write a letter for each sound heard.

Words are made of sounds hiding close together. When you stretch a word slowly, the sounds spread out so you can hear each one.

Stretch the word map: mmm-aaa-p. Three sounds. Write one letter for each sound you hear, in order.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Stretch words together like a rubber band, out loud, before any pencil touches paper.
  • Use your hand to physically pull apart as you stretch the word, so the idea has a motion to match.
  • It is fine if the letter your child picks is not the official spelling, as long as it matches the sound they heard.
  • Keep words short and simple this week: three sounds is plenty.
Talk about it:
  • What does it mean to stretch a word?
  • How many sounds did you hear in your word today?
  • Can you stretch your own name into its sounds?

Mastery looks like: They stretch a simple word into its separate sounds and write a matching letter for each sound, in the correct order.

Common stumbles: Saying the word fast instead of stretching it; writing letters out of order; skipping the middle sound.
