First name, every day, a little neater

Write your first name from memory, forming each letter left to right, a little neater than the day before.

Your name is special. It is the first word you will learn to write, and you will write it almost every single day this year.

Today you will trace your name, then try writing it yourself. Start at the top of each letter. Go slowly. Neat is better than fast.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Write your child's name on a card in dashed or dotted letters for tracing, or find their name in a handwriting app or workbook.
  • Hold the pencil together the first few times if needed. Your hand over theirs, gently, is how the motion gets learned.
  • Only the first letter of a name is a capital. Point that out every day this week until it is automatic.
  • Praise effort, not perfection. A wobbly name written independently beats a perfect name you wrote for them.
Talk about it:
  • Which letter in your name is your favorite to write?
  • Which letter is the hardest for you right now?
  • Can you write your name without looking at a model?

Mastery looks like: They write their first name from memory, starting each letter at the top, left to right, with only the first letter capitalized.

Common stumbles: Starting letters from the bottom instead of the top; capitalizing every letter; writing letters out of order.
