Shadow tracing in the morning

Trace a shadow in the morning and predict how it might look different later in the day.

A shadow forms when something blocks sunlight. Your own body blocks sunlight and makes a shadow on the ground. Today you will trace a shadow in the morning so you can compare it to the same shadow later.

Remember exactly where you stood. You will need to stand in that same spot again later to make a fair comparison.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Go outside together in the morning with sidewalk chalk.
  • Trace your child's shadow, or an object's shadow, carefully.
  • Mark the exact standing spot clearly so it can be found again later.
  • Note the time so you can return around midday for the comparison.
Talk about it:
  • Which direction does your shadow point this morning?
  • Is your shadow longer or shorter than you are?
  • What do you think will happen to it by afternoon?

Mastery looks like: They successfully trace a morning shadow, mark the standing spot, and make a real prediction about how it might change later.

Common stumbles: Forgetting to mark the exact standing spot, which ruins the later comparison; not noting the time of the first trace.
